Tampere 2015 Innovation Report

The theme of the 79th IS of EYP in Tampere: “Ideas change minds, people the world”  set an ambitious tone for a relaxed summer session. A session, where the participants are set to come up with ideas that change minds, and reflect on how they themselves can change the world, a session with two pillars: Ideas and Action. At the same time, Tampere 2015 was to take place under the Nordic principle of equality – where every participant was equally important and respected, and everyone could voice feedback, suggestions and contribute to the development of the session vision.

This ambitious theme and an empowering setting of the session served as a catalyst to a number of innovations, that we would like to share with you.

Most prominently, for the first time in an IS-setting, Tampere introduced EYP Projects – tangible action plan of the committee to solve the issues outlined in the committee topic.

The Media Team revolutionised EYP journalism with the use of Broadcast and a session communication platform Slack ensuring that every single participant of the session has interacted with each other and the Media Team by the end of the session.

Finally a number of best practices and ideas were implemented to ensure the Nordic equality of all the participants.

We are very happy to share the learning points of Tampere 2015. We hope that many of them can live on at further events of European Youth Parliament. We remain available for specific support and advice when implementing the innovations at future EYP events.

On behalf of the Tampere 2015 officials’ teams,

Joanna ‘Asia’ Dreger

President of the 79th International Session of European Youth Parliament

Thank you!

Tampere 2015 would like to thank once more all the partners and sponsors of the session for making our session unforgettable and a real success. Tampere 2015 would not have been possible without all the help and support we received. The feedback from delegates, officials and the personnel of the International Office has been overwhelming.

Thank you!

Finnish Night

After having finished with resolutions, delegates hopped on ferries and spent a Finnish night on Viikinsaari island outside of Tampere. The main sponsor of Tampere 2015, UPM, had organised many activities and organisers had arranged a Finnish barbecue.

Opening Ceremony

On Monday evening, the Opening Ceremony of Tampere 2015 took place at the Tampere Theatre. The Opening Ceremony included a panel discussion with two members of the honorary board of Tampere 2015 and a member of the European Parliament.

The members of the honorary board, Esko Aho, former Prime Minister of Finland (1991-1995) and Matti Vanhanen, current Member of Parliament in Finland and former Prime Minister of Finland (2003-2010), discussed together with Miapetra Kumpula-Natri, member of the European Parliament since 2014, and the moderator, Melissa Forss, an organiser of Tampere 2015, about the changes that the European Union has brought during the last twenty years. They also took a look at the future and talked about the ways in which Europe could regain its competitiveness. The discussion was very inspiring.

In addition, Anna-Kaisa Ikonen, Mayor of Tampere and Regional Mayor, Esa Halme, welcomed all the participants warmly in Tampere and the Tampere region. Head Organiser Robert Torvelainen enlightened the audience about the meaning of the slogan “Ideas change minds, people the world” and in the end President of Tampere 2015, Joanna Dreger, announced the session officially opened. All the participants then gathered to the City Hall (Raatihuone) for a cocktail hosted by Pekka Salmi, Deputy Mayor of Tampere.

The organiser team organised itself for a group photo at the City Reception. Tampere 2015 is based entirely on volunteers that have worked on this session for the last two years. Without them the session would not have happened.
